Different Passions

"It is their passion; nothing else excites them as it does; they cannot take seriously anything alien to music." Is this true? In my opinion it is not true. Yes, I love music but I have other passions before it. I think many of us put music first because it is a sort of therapy for them. In fact it is a therapy for all of us but do we always go to music when we have a problem? No.

I love music, but I have a bigger passion for family and even fashion and make-up. In my experience, when doing make-up, it relaxes me. I take the time to play with different colors and form them in different shapes to fit my eyes. When I am stressed I like to put outfits that I really like together and do my make-up which gives me time to think and sort my problems out. It is time consuming to let me relieve stress and think things thuroughly. Anyone can say that they take other things seriously. Music is just a form of interest and hobby for me. Maybe not others but I do have other passions before music. Sometimes I feel like without music I wouldn't be able to go on because of my mood and how I am feeling but, I could go without it. It is not hard to skip it. Of course on the other hand, I wouldn't be able to drive around without music playing because it'd be boring. I don't like driving around without music which is sort of contradicting myself. When I think about it, what would I not live without? Music or fashion/make-up? Of course I would pick fashion/make-up ANY day.

It is not alien to take something else seriously. Bloom is very blunt about things. He states his opinion and seems not to care if you have other ideas. He sticks to what he believes and seems to not change his mind at all. Coming across this statement on how no one can be passionate about anything else but music is a bit harsh. I have family and friends who have passions for many different things. For example, my father who has a passion for working. He likes to be able to support my family and I. He cannot go a day without working because he feels less of himself. Another example is my boyfriend who has a passion for independence. What I mean by that is that he loves to make his own money and make as much that he can to better himself and family. I can go on with the list of people I know that have bigger passions that don't include music.

For me, my passion is life. With that it includes family, fashion/make-up, independence, love and etc. Everybody is completely different when you find out what they are passionate for. I love music, but could I go a day without it? Yes I can. It is not my first option because there are so many other important things I think about instead. It all depends on the person. We shouldn't be all categorized as the same because we are not. We are all completely different and want different things.

  1. Yes, I agree people can love music and still have passion in other areas of their lives. Music does not consume the average person. I think that Bloom identifies the “extreme” person in the “extreme” example of his theory. Music is beautiful and is a universal love among many cultures, ethnicities, and languages across the world. I see music as a soundtrack to our lives not a dictator. Many of us are fascinated with music but still seek other passions. Since the beginning of time we have been entertained by music and as you have said it’s therapeutic.

  2. I am 100 percent on the same page with you. I really enjoy music a lot, but I am definitely not passionate about it. I believe that your passions are the things that you will base your life around. Like how you are passionate about make-up and I about painting. It sounds to me that make-up influences your mood and you plan on making a career out of it (or you already have), which to me sounds awesome by the way. I hope to one day be an artist of fashion designer because I am passionate about those things. I agree with you that Bloom over generalized in her quote. Young people are different and are passionate about a variety of things.
Love vs. passion is huge. I think that Bloom definitely got it wrong when he said that young people cannot get excited by anything other than music. I could also go a day without music. It is not the only thing in my life that relaxes me, too. My family would be first on the list if I was writing down my list of passions. I also like that you mentioned your family as well, they are a huge part of my life and definitely greater than music.
